What is CHIRIMEN?

Chirimen is the Japanese name for the fabric with crimps on the surface (often silk), typically used in kimonos. The art of Chirimen transforms mere scraps of this textured crepe fabric into adorable, hand-sewn pouches and ornaments.

Traditional fabrics. Modern charm.

Scraps of the beautiful and precious fabrics used to make kimonos inspired the first Chirimen crafts. Shibo – the distinctive bumpy texture of Chirimen - is hand sewn into modern and traditional accessories, whimsical ornaments, practical accessories and furoshikis (a cloth giftware). Since the Edo period of 1603, the craft of Chirimen has been passed down from generation to generation. Our course is designed by Nobuko Naito, a renown master crafter of Chirimen.
